Match Report

A brave effort from the injury-stricken Western Bulldogs was not enough to stop Geelong at Kardinia Park in an intense match on Friday night, with the Cats outlasting the Dogs by 25 points to maintain a place in the top four and celebrate milestone matches for Corey Enright and Jimmy Bartel in style. The Bulldogs, already decimated by injuries to key players in the lead up to he match, suffered further setbacks during the game, with Tom Liberatore, who had been the dominant player on the ground, limping off in the second term with an ankle injury, while teammate Jack Macrae injured a hamstring in the third term. Neither player returned to the field.

Despite those further setbacks, the Bulldogs remained competitive throughout, with three of the four quarters very even on the scoreboard. It was only in the third term that the Cats managed to get on top, establishing a decisive break although having only one more score shot, kicking 4.3 to 0.6. It was a triumphant Enright, playing his 326th match to set a new club games record, and Jimmy Bartel, who was playing his 300th match.

After a tight start to the match, the Bulldogs drew first blood in enemy territory with Tory Dickson seizing a loose ball and goaling at the four-minute mark. It was four minutes before Geelong responded, Rhys Stanley kicking accurately after a mark 45 metres out, but his first set off a run of goals for both sides. Tom Boyd put the Dogs back in front with a goal at the 11-minute mark but Daniel Menzel levelled the scores three minutes later. Motlop followed up with his first but the Bulldogs responded with a major to Josh Dunkley to level scores once more. The Cats looked like breaking away when both Stanley and Tom Hawkins goaled but the Dogs finished the quarter with majors to Jake Stringer and Dickson and it was Geelong by only a point - 5.2 to 5.1 - at quarter time.

After seven scoreless minutes in the second term, Stanley's third goal had Geelong ahead by seven but Boyd's second and Dickson's third and the Bulldogs back ahead by five points after 11 minutes. Then game the Bulldogs' crucial blow. Liberators, who had amassed an amazing 17 possessions in just a quarter and a half and was a key to the Dogs' chances, limped off with a serious ankle injury at the 14-minute mark and the complexion of the game changed. The Cats kicked the next three goals in a row to lead by 13 points before a hack out of the air from the goal square had the Bulldogs back with seven at the long break.

The Bulldogs had a big chance to start the third quarter strongly but Lin Jong, Marcus Bontempelli, Clay Smith and Caleb Daniel all missed gettable shots in the first 10 minutes of the term. When Geelong finally scored, it was accurately, with Mitch Duncan's first goal giving the Cats an eight-point lead. They took control of the match over the next 20 minutes, with two goals to Patrick Dangerfield and Stanley's fourth allowing them to go into the last break with a 27-point lead.

A quick takeaway from the centre bounce at the start of the last term saw Bulldog Lin Jong goal to cut the margin to 21 points but the Dogs couldn't find a follow-up goal and when Rhys Stanley kicked his fifth at the nine-minute mark, the margin was back out to 27. The Bulldogs kept fighting though, despite having lost 'Libba' and Macrae, and Zaine Cordy's first AFL goal had them back within 19 points after 19 minutes. Each side added another major before the match fittingly ended with 300-gamer kicking a running goal just before the final siren to close out an important win for the Cats.

Dangerfield was a key factor in Geelong's win, with 33 disposals and three goals while Luke Dahlhaus, himself returning from injury, had 26 possessions and laid five tackles to be one of the Bulldogs' best.

The Cats will look to consolidate their top four place with a percentage-boosting win over bottom side Essendon at Docklands next Sunday, while the Bulldogs, having lost two matches in a row for the first time this season, will look to somehow overcome their extensive injury woes and get back on the winners list against eight-placed North Melbourne next Saturday night.
