Match Report

While Sydney was expected to win its match against Port Adelaide at the SCG quite comfortably, few expected the insipid performance put forward by the Power on Saturday. The Swans came out firing, which was to be expected from a side tuning up for September but Port, which was itself still a potential finals contender, gave nothing in return - literally so in scoreboard terms in the opening term, which saw Sydney lead 41-0 at quarter time and going on to win 100 to 33, the magnitude of the win enabling the Swans to jump back into the top two.

The writing was on the wall early for Port Adelaide, with a running goal to Lance Franklin and a free kick and goal to Dean Towers giving the Swans an early 12-point break. The Power would have been expected to respond to that fast Sydney start but none was forthcoming. The Swans defence was impenetrable, while their attack scored at regular intervals, with Tom Mitchell, Gary Rohan, Isaac Heeney and Tom Papley all adding their names to the goalkickers list to see Sydney ahead 6.5 to 0.0 at quarter time.

Not much changed in the first 10 minutes of the second term. The Swans went on their merry way with majors to Franklin and Xavier Richards, and the scoreline was an embarrassing (for the Power) 54-0. Finally, at the 11-minute mark, a chain of unbroken possessions ended in the hands of Robbie Gray whose accurate snap from the pocket gave Port its first score and goal of the match. To their credit, the Power remained competitive for the remainder of the term, each side adding a further goal as the Swans took a 64-15 lead into the long break.

After an early third-quarter behind to Port's Chad Wingard, Sydney resumed its dominance. Josh Kennedy, Heeney and Rohan all added goals as the Swans advantage blew out to 66 points after eight minutes. Jarman Impey clawed one back for Port but that was to be the Power's only goal of the term, further Sydney goals to Dan Hannebery and Xavier Richards taking the Swans' lead to 74 points at three-quarter time.

If Port coach Ken Hinkley's instruction to his players at 'orange time' was to at least win the final quarter, then his players can claim to have achieved that goal. Only one major was registered for the term, and it went to the Power's Nathan Krakouer. With the Swans restricted to just two behinds, Port did in fact win the term, a small consolation for being on the end of a 67-point thrashing.

Isaac Heeney, who had struggled for form in the middle stages of the season, was back to his best for the Swans, gleaning 25 touches and kicking two goals. For Port, Ollie Wines (32 disposals, five tackles) put in a strong four-quarter performance.

The Swans will look to consolidate their top-two spot with a win over another finals aspirant, St Kilda, at Docklands next Saturday night. The Power are still a mathematical chance to make the eight but would need to win all three of their remaining matches against Melbourne, Adelaide and Gold Coast, and hope that North Melbourne loses its last three games.
