Match Report

St Kilda's slim finals hopes remain alive after the Saints comprehensively outclassed Carlton at the MCG on Sunday. With Tim Membrey kicking five goals and Josh Bruce four, the Saints have demonstrated that, while Nick Riewoldt continues to make a valuable contribution to the side, the team does not rely on him kicking a bag of goals to win. It was an impressive four-quarter performance from St Kilda, while the Blues, who pushed Sydney and Hawthorn to the limit in their previous two games, were disappointing.

An intense opening saw neither side score for the first four minutes, with a mark and goal to Maverick Weller breaking the deadlock. Carlton responded with a goal from Zach Tuohy but the Saints began to get on top after that, with majors to Membrey, David Armitage, and Jack Billings seeing them out to a 19-point lead midway through the term. Carlton shored up its defence after that, neither side scoring another goal for the quarter as St Kilda took a lead of 19 into the first break.

After an early goal to Saint Nathan Wright in the second quarter, the Blues finally had a small period of dominance. They failed to translate that to the scoreboard, though, adding just three behinds before St Kilda regained the initiative, with Membrey's third goal taking the Saints' lead out to 28 points. Carlton then showed some resistance and flair, with Dennis Armfield and Tuohy giving the Blues consecutive goals to cut the deficit to 16 points. But the Saints reset after that and peppered the goals for the remainder of the term, with goals to Jack Billings, Bruce, Jack Newnes and Membrey giving them a commanding 42-point half-time lead.

The third quarter brought no respite for Carlton, the Saints continuing to steam forward in waves. Tom Hickey, Bruce and Dylan Roberton all added majors while Carlton failed to trouble the scorers and the margin was out to 61 points after 10 minutes. The Blues managed to put the brakes on for the next 10 minutes, adding a couple of behinds while St Kilda didn't score. Riewoldt broke the drought with his first goal but Carlton then had its most productive period of the match, kicking three in a row via Patrick Cripps, Tuohy and Cripps again to close out the quarter. St Kilda remained firmly in charge at the last break, though, 47 points to the good.

St Kilda put paid to any thoughts of the Blues continuing their comeback into the final term with goals to Membrey and Bruce taking the margin back out beyond 10 goals in the first 10 minutes. The Saints then kept going, kicking three of the last four goals of the match to close out a win by nigh on 12 goals to stay in the hunt for the top eight. For Carlton the loss was a disappointing way to end the career of Andrew Walker, who announced prior to the game that it would be his last, with his failing body forcing him to retire.

Jack Newnes was outstanding for the winners, taking nine marks and giving off 32 disposals, while Kade Simpson (39 possessions, 10 marks) was one of Carlton's best.

While St Kilda's top-eight chances remain slim, they will become far stronger if the Saints can overcome Sydney at Docklands next Saturday night and Hawthorn defeats North Melbourne at the MCG on the same day. The Blues, who have faded disappointingly late in the season, will look to finish of the year on a high note, with their last three matches against Brisbane, Melbourne and Essendon all winnable.
