Match Report

A snapped goal from Nic Naitanui in the dying seconds of the match has given West Coast an amazing one-point win over GWS at Sydney Showground on Saturday. The Giants looked to have seen off a last-quarter challenge from the Eagles when Rory Lobb goaled to put them a goal ahead with a minute and a half remaining but, after a late point from Josh Hill brought West Coast to within five points, a throw in near the Eagles goals with eight seconds remaining saw Naitanui grab a loose ground ball and snap truly with his left foot to give the Eagles victory. The result saw GWS tumble from the top and kept alive West Coast's chances of securing a double chance.

Inaccuracy from both sides was the early order of the day, with a miss from the Giants' Jeremy Cameron followed by inaccurate shots from West Coast's Mark LeCras, Josh Kennedy and Matt Priddis. Jonathon Patton finally kicked truly at the 10-minute mark, and follow-up goals from Steve Johnson and Devon Smith saw GWS out to a 16-point lead going into time on before a mark and goal to Naitanui had the Eagles back within 11 at quarter time.

The Giants looked to be getting on top when Lobb and Ryan Griffen both goaled within the first five minutes of the second quarter to give them a 23-point lead but the next 20 minutes were largely controlled by West Coast, with a pair of goals from LeCras followed by one each to Kennedy and Priddis and scores were level early in the time-on period. A free kick for an arm-chop saw Patton kick his second from 15 metres out and GWS went into the long break with a narrow five-point lead.

Kennedy gave the lead to the Eagles with the first goal of the third term and the match became a see-sawing affair for a period after that. Toby Greene responded with a goal for the Giants but Mark Hutchings had West Coast back in front with a goal at the nine-minute mark. Brad Sheppard extended the Eagles' lead to seven points with his first five minutes later but GWS appeared to be stung into action as a result and finished the quarter off with five majors in a row, one each to Devon Smith, Tom Scully, Cameron, Griffen and Lobb to turn for home leading by 23 points.

West Coast gave notice that it wasn't yet done with when Kennedy marked and goaled within the first 80 seconds of the final term and when Priddis followed up with another at the 13-minute mark, the margin was back to 11 and it was 'game on'. After seven scoreless minutes, during which time Giant Adam Kennedy was stretchered from the ground after he was concussed in a tackle, Lobb gave the Giants breathing space with a mark and his third goal but the Eagles came again, and a major to Dom Sheed was followed by two to Luke Shuey and scores were level at the 31-minute mark. Cobb appeared to seal the deal with his fourth at the 36-minute mark but Naitanui's last-second snap saw the Eagles snatch victory from the jaws of defeat in a result that could later be looked back on as a defining one when the season is done and dusted.

Shuey was a match-winner for the Eagles with 38 possessions and six tackles to go with his two vital last-quarter goals. For GWS, Lobb's four goals and five marks put him among his team's best.

The top four is far from settled as a result of West Coast's win. The Eagles have two tough matches to come, against Hawthorn (top) at home and Adelaide (third) away, while the Giants should account for Fremantle at home next Saturday before a tough encounter against North Melbourne at Docklands in round 23.
