Match Report

It's been a long wait for Essendon players and fans but they finally got the chance to sing the club song on Sunday when the Bombers held on to defeat the Gold Coast Suns at the MCG. The Dons took an early lead in the match, which they maintained for much of the first half, but the Suns surged in the third quarter and looked like taking control. But a run of five goals in row from Essendon that started late in the third term set up a 17-point lead midway through the final term, and despite a string finish from Gold Coast, the Bombers held on to win by six points.

Strong defence from both sides, along with some skill errors saw the first 13 minutes of the match go by without a goal being scored. Peter Wright broke the drought to kick the first for the Suns before Orazio Fantasia marked and kicked Essendon's first major at the 16-minute mark. That set the Bombers on a bit of a roll, and follow-up goals from Adam Cooney and Sam Grimley saw them leading by 15 points going into time on before Jarrod Grant and Sam Day kicked late majors to have the Suns within two points at quarter time.

Tonk Miller took the Suns to the lead with the first goal of the second term but Conor McKenna, courtesy of a 50-metre penalty, goaled at the six-minute mark to restore the lead for Essendon. God Coast had a couple of chances in attack after that but Ryan Davis and Callum Ah Chee both missed shots. The Bombers then got on another mini roll, with majors to Fantasia and Joe Daniher, and they led by 11 going into time on. Only one further goal was scored for the half, and it went the way of Gold Coast to Brandon Matera, after which the Dons added a couple of behinds to lead by five at the long break.

The Suns came out firing in the third term and goals to Tom Lynch, Sam Day had Peter Wright had them suddenly ahead by 13 points midway through the quarter. Each side added a behind before Conor McKenna was the beneficiary of a 50-metre penalty for the second time in the match at the 22-minute mark and kicked his second goal to bring Essendon to within seven points of the Suns at the last change of ends.

A huge drop punt from outside 50 on an angle by Mitch Brown at the two-minute mark of the final quarter brought the Bombers to within a point and gave them a real spark. They follow up with goals to Jackson Merrett and Fantasia in the next six minutes and when Craig Bird added another at the 17-minute mark, the margin was a game-high 17 points and Essendon looked headed for victory. The tide turned after that but Gold Coast could not find the big sticks, adding an incredible six consecutive behinds before Tom Lynch kicked truly to cut the margin to just six points. Essendon held on from there, though, to record its first win since defeating Melbourne in round two.

David Zaharakis played his best game for a long time for the winners, gleaning 40 disposals and laying six tackles, while Miller was a standout for the Suns, taking seven marks and giving off 39 disposals.

The Bombers will see out the season with matches against the Western Bulldogs and Carlton, while Gold Coast will meet Collingwood at the MCG and Port Adelaide at home in its last two games for 2016.
