At Maughan Thiem Hyundai Oval in Woodville, the Eagles hosted the Roosters. The Eagles took out all the points in the two matches from last year, starting with their Round 7 win of 44 points, followed by a 39-point win in Round 17 from a match that had just 14 goals. The Eagles had opened this year well, but subsequent losses to the Panthers then an AFL-loaded Crows sent them back to the drawing board while the Roosters' copped a loss to Port after their dominant Round 2 showing.
The Roosters would hold the lead at quarter-time, but only by three points thanks to some early inaccuracy which saw them score 2.3 to the Eagles two goals. But it was the Eagles' second quarter that put the Roosters right back in their place, keeping them to just one behind whilst scoring 6.5 for themselves to lead by 37 points at the long break. Don't let that one quarter of football fool you though, the Eagles day was marred by panicky football especially later on and with some key players missing the newer blood's early yips may be just a temporary thing. The Roosters were able to string some majors together again in the third quarter, cutting the deficit back to 26 points by three quarter-time after scoring 3.3 to the Eagles' 1.4. The Roosters would not cause a boilover though, the Eagles keeping the visitors at bay long enough to record a two-goal win after conceding 4.2 and adding two goals to their final tally.
Jared Petrenko was the Eagles' best afield, the Roosters voting Callum Winkie as their best.
