On Sunday afternoon at the Prospect Oval, the Roosters faced the Magpies. Their last encounter was back in Round 3, the Magpies hammering the Roosters to a 43-point defeat at Alberton for their first win of the season. Since then, the Magpies hadn't been regarded as a finals threat and despite a loss to the Crows last week, key victories have seen them become a possible contender for a berth. The Roosters are already deep in preparations for next season, their year practically over already with their position on the league ladder ruling them out from September action.
The Magpies were on a mission today, although having a bit of a hard time in goals they scored 5.4 to North's 1.2 to begin the afternoon's proceedings and take a 26-point lead at quarter-time. They would extend that to 45 points by the long break, the 'Pies adding 4.2 to 1.1 in the second quarter. Scary stat time - Port's first quarter disposal tally. They had 127 to North's 63, by the end of the match the Magpies had 161 more disposals than the Roosters! The third quarter belonged to the Roosters on the scoreboard, but only by a few misses. They outscored the Magpies 4.4 to 4.1 to scratch a few points off their lead, not much of a highlight though given the deficit, which was still seven goals at the final change. The Roosters didn't have anything left in the final term, the Magpies taking the ever so vital premiership points with their 57-point victory after finishing the game with a 3.4 to 1.1 final quarter.
Kane Mitchell was voted best for Port, the Roosters named Mitch Harvey as their standout.
