In the southern suburbs the Panthers faced the Bloods at the Hickinbotham Oval in Noarlunga. These two had a couple of interesting encounters last season, there was a Round 8 thriller where the Bloods escaped with a one-point win, but later in the season the Panthers managed the get the last word against the eventual premiers in with their 23-point victory in Round 17.
Two rounds in and the defending champs were already up to their necks in it and it was only going to get worse today, the Panthers breaking out to a 25-point lead at quarter-time after kicking 6.2 to the Bloods' 2.1. That gap would be extended to 29 points by the half-time break, Souths kicking four goals with no blemishes while the Bloods scored 3.2 in that second term. Westies only winning stat was the clearances -- eventually racking up 44-30 -- but their skill errors were the telling factor, along with South's defence where many of their attacking runs were coming from. The game breaker came in the third quarter for the blue and whites, bagging themselves 7.2 to the visitors lowly 1.2 as the deficit exploded to 65 points going into the final change. The Bloods best scoring effort was the final term, where they managed to take 4.2 but South's one extra on top of that effort saw the final margin stretch to 71 points, putting the Panthers level on premiership points with the Crows.
Brett Eddy bagged eight goals and was named best for South, while the Bloods named Kaine Stevens as their standout on a dismal afternoon.
