Match Report

Few people knew what to expect from the round one encounter between Gold Coast and Brisbane at Carrara on Saturday night, with both sides coming off disappointing seasons in 2016. For the Suns, the return of Gary Ablett to full fitness held new promise, while the Lions would be hoping for signs of improvement under the guidance of new coach Chris Fagan.

Whatever the expectations of either side, no one could possibly have predicted how the first 20 minute would unfold. The Lions made the first move, a snapped goal from Mitch Robinson giving the Lions the lead after just one minute. Within another couple of minutes, Robinson had a second major and Brisbane was on a roll. And that roll kept going - and going. Robinson's two goals were followed by majors to Michael Close, Eric Hipwood, Dayne Zorko (twice) and Tom Bell.

By the time the clock ticked over into time on, the Lions had scored an incredible 7.2.44 and the Suns were scoreless, the home crowd at Carrara stunned into near silence. Alex Sexton finally put Gold Coast on the scoreboard with a goal just after the 20-minute mark, and another to ex-Docker Michael Barlow had the margin back to a barely acceptable 31 points at quarter time.

The Suns manage to stem the flow of goals against them in the second quarter, but once again by time on they had scored no goals themselves, with three to Brisbane giving the Lions a commanding 47-point lead. The two sides traded goals in time on, and the long break saw Brisbane in control and 46 points to the good.

A long haul awaited Gold Coast when the second half began, but the Suns got it off to the best possible start with goals to Touk Miller and Sean Lemons within three minutes. A goal the other way from Ryan Lester settled the Lions, but Ben Ainsworth and 'Two-Metre' Peter Wright kicked two more for the Suns, and the margin was suddenly back to 28 points. Ryan Bastinac again settled Brisbane with his first goal, but the Suns kicked another two in a row through Callum Ah Chee and Tom Lynch and the difference was an even four goals at the 24-minute mark. Brisbane pulled one back via Hipwood, but the Suns continued the pattern with two more majors to Josh Schoenfeld and Aaron Hall and Gold Coast was amazingly within 17 points at the final change.

It was all the Suns when the final term began, but they sprayed three shots before Lynch goaled to cut the margin to just eight points after 10 minutes. A minute later, a long goal to Hall ha the Suns within two points before misses to Wright and Adam Saad levelled the scores midway through the quarter with all the momentum with Gold Coast. Somehow, Brisbane wrested back control, a pair of behinds and a goal restoring an eight-point lead before a behind a goal to Lynch had the Suns back within a point. Both sides had chances after that but he final score of the match - a behind to Brisbane's second-gamer Jake Barrett - saw the Lions home by two points in a bizarre match.

Tom Rockliff was outstanding for the Lions, with Zorko and Dayne Beames also excellent, while the Suns were well served by Hall, Miller and Ablett.

After a first-up win, Brisbane will return to the Gabba to host Essendon on Saturday, with the Gold Coast facing a tough away match against GWS on the same day.
