Match Report

Melbourne defeated Carlton as expected in its match at the MCG on Sunday afternoon, but the Demons were made to work a lot harder for the win than many expected, finishing 22 points clear after the Blues surprisingly took a three-point lead into the last change of ends.

The Demons got off to a great start with Jack Watts marking and gaoling after just one minute and followed up with another to co-captain Nathan Jones seven minutes later. That gave Melbourne a 12-point lead but Matthew Wright's first major had Carlton back within seven points after 10 minutes. Sam Weideman kicked another for Melbourne but Carlton's Curnow responded again. At that stage, five goals had been kicked in the first 15 minutes and the match looked like being a high-scoring affair. But the goals dried up completely after that, the only further score for the term being a point to Carlton's Jack Silvagni, and it was Melbourne by an even goal at quarter time.

Melbourne broke away in the first 12 minutes of the second quarter, with goals to Jeff Garlett, Christian Salem and ruckman Max Gawn. Those goals to the margin out to 24 points but Carlton stemmed the flow from that point and after behinds to Sam Petrevski-Seton and Billie Smedts, kicked a major via Marc Murphy to cut the margin to 16 points. Dennis Armfield followed up with another goal just before half time, and the difference was only 10 points at the long break.

Scores were at a premium early in the third quarter, a behind to either side the only scores of the first eight minutes. Wright broke the drought with a brilliant running goal that brought the Blues within four points and then snapped another midway through the term to give Carlton the lead for the first time in the match. Petrevski-Seton extended the margin to eight points at the 18-minute mark and the Blues appeared to have the momentum but a late goal to Jeff Garlett had Melbourne back within three at the last change.

The final term began as the third had, just a behind to each side for the first six minutes before Christian Petracca goaled to restore the lead for Melbourne. Watts' second extended the Demons' lead to nine but Jarrod Pickett's first AFL goal had Carlton back within three halfway through the quarter. Jacob Weitering had a chance to put the Blues back ahead but his dribble kick hit the post and a goal to Dom Tyson at the other end had Melbourne out to an eight-point lead. The Demons steadied from there, and kicked three of the last four goals to see them safely to victory.

Best for Melbourne was Christian Salem (31 possessions, seven marks), while Carlton was well served by Wright (three goals, seven marks).

Melbourne will take on Geelong at Docklands next Saturday, both sides undefeated, while the winless Blues will meet the undefeated Essendon at the MCG on Sunday.
