Match Report

Sydney's season is hanging by a thread after the Swans came up short against the West Coast Eagles at Subiaco on Thursday night. The young Sydney side was gallant throughout the night but the more experienced Eagles gradually got on top after the long break, extending a half-time lead of 12 points to 18 at the last change and 26 when the final siren sounded. While the win firmly entrenches West Coast in the top six, it leaves the Swans equal last with a 0-4 record.

The first quarter of the match was an intense low-scoring affair which brought memories of the two sides' classic finals encounters of 2005 and 2006. The only score for the first nine minutes was a rushed behind to Sydney. West Coast finally broke the drought with a long goal to Andrew Gaff, with Josh Kennedy following up for the Eagles five minutes later to give them a two-goal lead. Sydney eventually settled and goals in time on to Harry Cunningham and Jordan Foote saw scores level at 2.2 apiece at quarter time.

Goals were again hard to come by in the second term, the two sides trading behinds until Lance Franklin received a free kick for being held in a marking contest. He converted, and the Swans were four points ahead after 10 minutes. The Eagles hit back with a goal to Jeremy McGovern three minutes later, giving them a lead they would not relinquish for the rest of the night. Kennedy added a behind and then a goal but Tom Papley responded for the Swans at the 25-minute mark, cutting the deficit to four points. West Coast dominated the last few minutes, though and a goal to LeCras along with behinds to Josh Hill and Kennedy had the Eagles ahead by an even two goals at the half.

The Swans would have been hopeful of getting the first goal of the third term but LeCras snuffed those hopes out after just 28 seconds, his second goal giving West Coast an 18-point lead. Andrew Gaff follows up with another at the five-minute mark and things were looking dangerous for Sydney. But the Swans rallied after that, with goals to Franklin and Oliver Florent cutting the margin to two goals. Josh Hill responded for the Eagles, but Will Hayward's first had the Swans back within 12 after 16 minutes. Both sides' defences got on top later in the quarter, the only other goal going to Eagle Jamie Cripps, and it was West Coast by 18 at he last change.

After Hill snapped an early last-quarter behind, Sydney got on a roll and majors to Hayward and Jake Lloyd after the marks had the Swans back within six points after 10 minutes. But the Eagles held firm and, after Luke Shuey extended the margin back out to three goals, gradually got right on top, finishing the match with a goal to McGovern and two to Cripps to eke out a hard-fought, but in the end quite comfortable, win.

Shut was a winner for the Eagles, gathering 30 possessions and eight marks, while for Sydney, Josh Kennedy (33 disposals, five tackles) was his usual reliable self and Lloyd (29 disposals, six marks) was very good.

West Coast will look to improve its record to 4-1 against Hawthorn on Sunday. While the Hawks are a shadow of the side they once were, the Eagles' record at the MCG is poor, so the match promises to be an interesting encounter. For Sydney, things might get worse before they get better, the 0-4 Swans to take on flag favourites GWS at the SCG on Saturday.
