Match Report

After a string of heartbreakingly narrow losses, North Melbourne has finally broken through for its first win of 2017, defeating Gold Coast at Docklands by 13 points on Saturday night. The match was an entertaining affair throughout the evening, with the lead changing hands several times. The Suns were threatening late in the match, but the Kangaroos held on to record their first win since round 19 last year.

Gold Coast had the better off the early minutes in the game, but the Suns' first two scoring shots brought only behinds, one each to Jarrod Harbrow and Jack Martin. North took its first chance with Ben Brown snaring his first goal at the five-minute mark, but Gold Coast responded through Tom Lynch two minutes later. The Roos then took their turn to have a couple of misses, Brown and Jamie Macmillan both off target, but Nathan Hrovat's first goal had them ahead by six points after 13 minutes. The Suns then took control for a period, and two goals to Peter Wright had them ahead by eight points going into time on. They added a further goal through Brandon Matera, but a late major to Sam Gibson had North back within a goal at quarter time.

Tom Lynch's second major had Gold Coast out to a two-goal lead after four minutes, but North responded through Kayne Turner three minutes later. A lovely pass from Gary Ablett, who was dominating all over the ground, saw Lynch kick his third goal at the 10-minute mark, but the Kangaroos turned the tide after that, kicking three of the next four goals - two to Brown and one to Hrovat - and at half time they led by two points.

Michael Barlow restored the lead to the Suns with his second goal one minute into the third quarter, and Matera's second goal five minutes later had them ahead by 10 points. But the tide turned dramatically after that and the next 20 minutes saw North have its most dominant period of the match. The Kangas kicked five goals in a row to jump to a 20-point lead, before late majors to Callum Ah Chee and Alex Sexton had Gold Coast back touch and just seven points in a arrears at three-quarter time.

With the match in the balance, the first eight minutes of the final quarter was an arm-wrestle. Jarrod Lyons had a running shot for goal in that period for the Suns, but his kick bounced the wring side of the goal post. The stalemate was broken when Ben Brown was awarded a controversial free kick for what the umpire deemed as a throw from Matera. Brown kicked the goal and added another after a mark three minutes later. Jed Anderson made it three in a row for North to extend the lead to 24 points but Ah Chee's second had the Suns back within 18. Brown then kicked his sixth and the Roos looked home but Gold Coast reversed the momentum after that, and goals to Ablett and Jack Bowes had them back within 14 points. Matera had a chance to close the gap further but his shot missed and North hung on to win by 13 points.

Shaun Higgins (28 possessions, six tackles) and Brown (six goals, eight marks) were match-winners for the Kangaroos, while Ablett was back to his best for the Suns. collecting 45 touches and laying nine tackles.

With a win finally under its belt, North faces a huge task in round seven, hosting the rampant Adelaide Crows at Bellerive Oval in Hobart on Saturday. Gold Coast will also have tough job, taking on third-placed Geelong at Carrara on Saturday night.
