Match Report

The 45th Western Derby had the potential to be a very interesting affair, with West Coast and Fremantle coming into the match with a 3-3 record, the Dockers having won three in a row and the Eagles having suffered a hammering at the hands of Hawthorn a week earlier. But the Eagles, the nominal home team, turned the match into a one-sided affair in the space of one quarter, booting seven goals to one in the opening term to set up a 41-point win. Fremantle was more than competitive for the remainder of the match, but the damage had been done.

It didn't take long for the Eagles to get rolling, with a spearing kick from Sharrod Wellingham marked by Josh Kennedy, who kicked the game's first goal before the two-minute mark. Liam Duggan followed up with another three minutes later, and when Kennedy kicked his second at the 11-minute mark, West Coast was already 17 points ahead. Jack Darling his first to make it 23 soon after, but the Dockers finally broke through when Cam McCarthy goaled after 17 minutes. It was all West Coast for the rest of the quarter, though, with Josh Hill kicking two majors in a row and Darling his second as the Eagles took a commanding six-goal lead into quarter time.

Kennedy kept going on his merry way in the second term, kicking a behind and then his third goal after a mark which came about as a result of some clever play by Luke Shuey. Cam McCarthy tried to keep the Dockers in touch with his second goal, but majors to Hill and Mark LeCras saw the Eagles' lead blow out to 49 points after 12 minutes. McCarthy continued the one-man show at Fremantle's end with his third goal midway through the term but after a further 15 minutes with neither side scoring a major, it was West Coast in command, 45 points clear at half time.

Fremantle made the early running in the third quarter, and a goal from Brady Grey had the Dockers back within 38 points after 10 minutes. The Eagles reset after that, though, and Kennedy's fourth goal and a second to LeCras had the margin out to 50 points. Two majors in a row to Shane Kersten brought the margin back to 38 again, Kennedy once again came to the fore and his fifth goal has West Coast 44 points ahead at the last change of ends.

The match was virtually a foregone conclusion in the last quarter, the final margin being the only unknown. The two sides shared goals, kicking three each, with Kennedy kicking his sixth and LeCras his third, as the Eagles coasted to a 41-point win, their fourth of the year, keeping them in touch with the top four.

Best for West Coast included Elliot Yeo (14 marks, 32 disposals) and Jeremy McGovern (22 touches, 13 marks), while Connor Blakely (29 possessions) was a standout for the Dockers.

A pivotal match awaits the Eagles next Saturday - Port Adelaide at the Adelaide Oval. With both sides locked on four wins, the winner will be able to keep pushing for a top-four place, while the loser's place in the top eight could be vulnerable. For Fremantle, the loss saw it slip back to 11th, and the Dockers will be looking to get back on the winners list against Essendon at Subiaco on Sunday.
