Match Report

A round full of AFL upsets continued at Carrara on Saturday night, with the Gold Coast Suns defeating Geelong by 25 points on Saturday night. The Suns broke away from the Cats with a five-goal burst on either side of quarter time and then withstood no fewer than three challenges from the favourites, staving them all off to record a win full of merit.

Aaron Hall got the Suns off to a great start with a magnificent long running goal at the five-minute mark, but the match then began to unfold as most expected, with Geelong scoring the next three majors via Tom Hawkins, Hawkins again and Sam Menegola, who was a late inclusion into the side after the withdrawal of Lachie Henderson. That put the Cats 12 points clear but Gold Coast turned the match around completely from that point, and goals to Tom Lynch, Brandon Matera, Callum Ah Chee and Gary Ablett saw the Suns out to a 16-point lead at quarter time.

It took only 19 seconds in the second term for Gold Coast to find its sixth goal, a nice snap from Alex Sexton. That put the Suns 22 points clear and the game was in danger of slipping away from Geelong. The Cats responded as good sides do, and goals to Aaron Black, Menegola and skipper Joel Selwood had them back within five points after 18 minutes. But Gold Coast was not about to fold without a fight, and kicked the next three majors through Lynch, Michael Barlow and Matera to skip four goals clear once more. Geelong halted the Suns' charge with a late goal to Mackie, but was still 18 points in arrears when the half-time siren sounded.

Geelong had a couple of chances to make inroads in their deficit early in the third term, but shots from Dan Menzel and Menegola both missed, and a strong mark and goal to Peter Wright had Gold Coast's lead back out to 23 points after eight minutes. The Cats then mounted their second serious challenge of the match, and kicked three majors in a row, one each to Hawkins, Black and Motlop, to close the margin to just three points after 17 minutes. But the Suns again stood firm, and closed out the third quarter with goals to David Swallow and Jarryd Lyons to take a 16-point buffer into the final change.

The Suns started the final quarter as they had the second, with an early goal that took their lead out to 22 points, Jack Martin the goalkicker this time. But the next phase of play, also mimicked that of the second term, with Geelong scoring the next three majors, this time via Menzel, Menegola and Darcy Lang. After 10 minutes, the Cats were within five points and threatening to steal the match. For the third time, though, Gold Coast absorbed the onslaught and responded with a burst of its own. Lynch, Touk Miller and Ah Chee all kicked goals over the next 12 minutes, and a further goal to Ah Chee at the 24-minute mark, 'sealed the deal' for the Suns. Geelong hit back with two of the last three goals but they were small consolation as the Suns went on to record an impressive win.

Aaron Hall (32 touches, 10 marks, eight tackles) and Jarrod Harbrow (30 possessions, six marks) played pivotal roles in the win, while Menegola (three goals, 22 disposals) and Mitch Duncan were among the best for Geelong.

The Suns' reward for their win will be a trip to China! They will take on Port Adelaide in faraway Shanghai next Sunday in the first AFL match for premiership points to be played in the northern hemisphere. The Cats, having lost two games in a row in which they were favoured to win, will start favourites once more when they take on Essendon at the MCG on Saturday, but their confidence will surely be dented as they head into that match.
