Match Report

They appeared to be dead and buried a week ago but the Swans have still have a faint pulse after they had a convincing win against Brisbane on Sunday afternoon. A classic SCG display from Lance 'Buddy' Franklin set his team alight, and Sydney skipped away to an early lead and never really looked back from there, running out winners by 54 points to climb off the bottom of the ladder.

Franklin set the tone for the match in the very first minute, marking on the 50-metre arc and putting through a long goal. The Swans followed up with a goal to Dean Towers at the six-minute mark, and when Will Hayward added another six minutes later, they were ahead by 20 points and the Lions looked to be in for a long and tough afternoon. Ryan Lester finally put Brisbane on the board with his first midway through the term, but Sydney kicked four of the next five goals to take command of the game and lead by 35 points at quarter time.

The procession continued early in the second quarter as Harry Cunningham kicked a brace of goals as the Swans charged to a 48-point lead after six minutes. To its credit, Brisbane stemmed the tide over the next 10 or so minutes, and managed a couple of goals through Michael Close and Josh Scache to close the margin to 36 points, but Franklin's third goal had Sydney back out to a 42-point lead after 18 minutes. The two sides shared the next four goals, with Franklin kicking his fourth and fifth for Sydney, who took a 44-point lead into the long break.

Brisbane continued to fight in the third quarter, and traded goals with Sydney over the first 20 minutes, as goals from Luke Parker, Zak Jones and Dan Hannebery were each answered by Lions Jake Barrett, Schache and Ben Keays. But Franklin again came to the fore in the time-on period, kicking his seventh and eighth goals as the Swans went into the final end-change with a 56-point lead.

Will Hayward extended the Swans lead with the first goal of the final quarter but the Lions showed some resistance with majors to Nick Robertson, Tom Rockliff and Lester reducing the deficit to 38 points early in time on. Sydney finished strongly, though, and finished the match off with the final two goals, the last of those fittingly going to Franklin on the verge of the final siren.

Franklin was clearly the best player on the ground, taking nine marks to go with his eight goals. For Brisbane, Tom Rockliff (11 tackles, 32 possessions) played a great game against the Swans' tide.

The Swans are now 1-6, and they have been replaced at the foot of the ladder by Brisbane (also 1-6). Sydney will take on North Melbourne (14th, 2-5) at Docklands next Sunday while the Lions will take on Hawthorn (16th, 2-5) in a tough assignment at York Park on Saturday.
