Match Report

In a crucial match for both clubs, Hawthorn has pipped Melbourne by just three points in a thrilling encounter at the MCG on Sunday. The Hawks jumped the Demons, and controlled the match for the first half and beyond, leading by as much as 35 points a minute into the third quarter, before withstanding a withering comeback that saw Melbourne level the scores early in the final term. The match was one the Demons would have expected to win if they are to make finals this year, while for Hawthorn, the result kept its faint finals hopes alive.

The Hawks were 'on song' early, and an early behind from late inclusion Will Langford was followed by a goal to Tim O'Brien, giving them a seven-point lead. Melbourne responded with a goal to Cam Pedersen after a strong mark, but Hawthorn dominated the rest of the quarter, with majors to Jarryd Roughead, Jack Gunston, Luke Breust and Ben McEvoy giving them a 27-point lead by the time the quarter-time siren sounded.

Jack Viney cut the margin back to 22 points with the first goal of the second quarter, but the next two majors went Hawthorn's way via Gunston and Langford as its lead blew out to 34 points. Jesse Hogan marked and goaled to pull it back to 28 and Nathan Jones followed up with another for the Demons but the only goal of the time-on period went the Hawks' way to Ben McEvoy, and they went into half time with a lead of 29 points.

Hawthorn's lead was out to 35 points when captain Roughead marked and converted within the first minute of the third term, but the Demons began to mount their challenge soon after, with Jayden Hunt kicking a brace of goals to bring Melbourne within 23 points. Another one from Hunt's teammate Jeff Garlett had the margin back to 16 points before the 10-minute mark, but Roughead's second of the quarter followed by another from Shaun Burgoyne had the Hawks' lead back out to 27. But the time-on period was dominated by Melbourne and they racked up four goals before the siren, one to former Hawk Jordan Lewis and two more to Garlett to close the gap to a solitary point at the final turn.

The final term started perfectly for Hawthorn, with an immediate centre clearance resulting in a goal to O'Brien after just 20 seconds, but a free kick and goal to Jack Watts had the Demons back within a point after five minutes. Four minutes later they had a chance to grab the lead but a set shot from Nathan Jones hit the post, levelling the scores. The Hawks regained control after that, and majors to Roughead and Isaac Smith had them back out to a 14-point lead as the quarter entered time on. The Demons mounted one final challenge with goals to Hogan and Lewis but Hawthorn's defence held firm in the final frantic seconds of the game as it held on for a thrilling win.

Best for Hawthorn included Tom Mitchell (12 tackles, 31 disposals) and Ben McEvoy (53 hitouts, two goals), while the Demons were well served by Jack Viney, who had 15 tackles and 32 disposals.

The Hawks have risen from 18th to 17th to 16th over the past three weeks and will start hot favourites to record their third win when they host Brisbane at York Park on Saturday. Melbourne has a 3-4 record and has slipped out of the eight. It will face a very tough task on Saturday night, taking on the Crows at the Adelaide Oval.
