Match Report

St Kilda's season continues to build nicely, after it did what good sides do, defeating a side below it on the ladder despite not playing at its best. Coming off a very impressive win against the Giants a week earlier, the Saints threatened to blow Carlton away a couple of times at Docklands on Saturday, but had to withstand two strong challenges from the Blues before eventually eking out a 19-point win to move up to sixth place on the ladder.

The Saints had been expected to make short work of Carlton and, after an early goal to Blue Jacob Weitering, it looked as though they would do exactly that when they kicked the four goals in a row through Jack Billings, Josh Bruce, Billings again and Tim Membrey to jump to a 20-point lead half way through the term. But a goal to Jack Silvagni at the 17-minute mark sparked the Blues, who added two further majors through Charlie Curnow and Silvagni again to trail by just three points at quarter time.

Jack Billings kicked his second goal a minute into the second term to extend St Kilda's lead to nine points but the only two majors of the next 20 minutes were scored by Carlton captain Marc Murphy as the Blues took a four-point lead into the time-on period. The Saints finished the half off strongly, though, and a third goal to Billings and behinds from Darren Minchington and Jack Steele saw them in front by four points at the half.

Matthew Kreuzer had a chance to restore the lead to Carlton at the four-minute mark of the third quarter but his shot from the 50-metre arc missed, and four minutes later Nick Riewoldt compounded Carlton's woes by kicking truly and extending St Kilda's lead to eight points. The Saints added two more over the next 10 minutes through Seb Ross and Billings to take their lead out to a match-high of 24 points but the Blues came to life unexpectedly late in the term and goals to Patrick Cripps, Tom Williamson and Bryce Gibbs had them within five points at 'orange time'.

Both sides had chances early in the final quarter, with St Kilda adding one behind and Carlton two before Patrick Cripps put Carlton ahead by two points with a goal at the five-minute mark. The Blues look to have all the running at that stage, having kicked the match's last four goals, but the Saints responded, levelling the scores with a couple of behinds and then returning to the lead with a goal to Ross at the 10-minute mark. From there they gradually ground out a win, holding the Blues goalless for the rest of the match and adding two more through Josh Bruce and Jack Bruce to recorded a not overly convincing but important win.

Billings was outstanding in his 50th AFL match, picking up 30 touches, taking 12 marks and kicking five goals for the winners. For the Blues, Patrick Cripps (11 marks, 30 disposals) played a fine game.

The Saints are now 5-3 and have a winnable game against Sydney at Docklands on Saturday, while Carlton (13th, 3-5) will travel to Perth to play Fremantle (ninth, 5-3) at Subiaco on Sunday.
