Match Report

The welcome return of Jake Stringer to the team has helped the Western Bulldogs to record a strong winner over St Kilda at Docklands on Saturday. Stringer had missed two games with a knee injury, and the Bulldogs missed him in both, narrowly defeated by West Coast and Geelong. But on Saturday his presence made all the difference as he kicked five goals to be the only multiple goalkicker on the ground as the Bulldogs powered to a 40-point victory.

St Kilda had the better of the early stages of the match, and drew first blood when Jack Billings was able to get free and kick an easy goal at the two-minute mark. The Bulldogs then worked their way into the game and, after a miss from Marcus Bontempelli, Stringer broke free in a similar fashion to Billings and scored the Dogs' first. The Saints hit back with a goal to Daniel McKenzie, his first at AFL level, but a mark and goal from just inside 50 to Stringer had the Bulldogs ahead by a whisker at quarter time.

A goal from Tim Membrey within the first two minutes of the second quarter had St Kilda back in front and the Saints largely controlled the play for the next 10 or 12 minutes but were unable to convert their dominance into any sort of scoreboard pressure. Eventually the tide turned and when it did, the Bulldogs were able to make it count. Stringer kicked his, and the Dogs' third and fourth goals at the 15 and 20-minute marks, and when Tory Dickson marked and goaled a few minutes later, the Bulldogs were ahead by 16, a lead which they took into the long break.

The Saints started the third term as they had the first and second, with the first major, this time to Jade Gresham on the run. But as in the other two quarters, they were unable to back that upon with a second goal, and with the Dogs responding through Bailey Dale and skipper Bob Murphy, the lead was out to 20 points after 10 minutes. A nice roving goal to Jack Newnes cut St Kilda's deficit to 15 points midway through the term, but the Bulldogs took complete charge from there and majors to Matt Suckling, Bontempelli and Stringer had the margin out to a game high 34 points when the three-quarter time siren sounded.

And early mark and goal from outside 50 to Jason Johannisen more or less sealed the deal for the Bulldogs four minutes into the final term. The Dogs had chances to blow the margin right out after that but Johannisen and Bontempelli both missed shots they should have kicked, after which St Kilda fought back through goals to Mav Weller and Paddy McCartin. The Saints then missed chances of their own, with Weller, McCartin and Leigh Montagna all kicking points, and then the Bulldogs finished off strongly, majors to Liam Picken and Tom Boyd taking the final margin back out to 40 points.

Stringer's five goals and seven marks put him, along with Bontempelli (22 disposals, seven marks), amongst the Bulldogs best, while Jack Newnes (35 possessions, eight marks) was perhaps the best player for St Kilda.

With Saturday's win having lifted them into the top four, the Western Bulldogs will now have a week off before travelling to the SCG to meet last year's Grand Final opponent Sydney for the second time this season on Thursday week. St Kilda will also have a bye in round 11, and will then take on league leaders the Adelaide Crows at the Adelaide Oval on Friday week.
