Match Report

The premiership race was once again thrown wide open at Kardinia Park on Friday night, with Geelong scoring a resounding win against Adelaide, dislodging the Crows from top place on the ladder. The Cats had the better of the first half and then broke the back of Adelaide in the third term, jumping out to a 47-point lead. The Crows showed some fight after that to cut the final margin to just 22, but that belied the comprehensive nature of the home side's win.

Patrick Dangerfield got the Cats off to a great start with a beautiful long goal on the run, kick from well outside the 50-metre arc. The Crows then found their groove with a Charlie Cameron shot missing and Taylor Walker marking soon after to goal and put the visitors ahead by a point. That was to be the only time in the match that Adelaide led, and when skipper Joel selwood goaled at the eight-minute mark to restore Geelong's advantage, it was the last lead change of the match. The two sides each added one more goal in what was a relatively low-scoring first term, but a spate of behinds saw the Cats ahead by nine points at quarter time.

Again stamping himself on the match, Dangerfield kicked the first major of the second quarter after a mark to give the Cats a 15-point lead. They added two further behinds before Tom Hawkins roved pack to snap a goal which put Geelong 23 points clear after six minutes. Josh Jenkins scrambled a goal for the Crows a minute later, but the Cats answered soon after when Dan Menzel kicked his first. The Crows mounted a charge with goals to Charlie Cameron and Tom Lynch, but the home side closed out the half with majors to Hawkins, Harry Taylor and Steven Motlop to lead by 29 points at the half.

Adelaide had a couple of early chances to make inroads into the deficit early in the third term but could add only two behinds. From there, Geelong set up its match-winning lead, kicking the next three majors through Menzel, Dangerfield and James Parsons to clear out to a game-high lead of 47 points. The Crows fought back to kick the last two goals of the term through Walker and Eddie Betts, but it was the Cats comfortably at three-quarter time, the lead at the last change 34 points.

Menzel's third goal at the two-minute mark of the final term put the Cats 40 points ahead and the result virtually beyond doubt and thereafter the match petered out somewhat, particularly for the home side, which added only five more behinds to its score. The Crows to their credit fought out the game, the final three majors going their way via Andy Otten, Walker and Jenkins to cut the final margin to 22, somewhat of a flattering one for Adelaide.

Captain Joel Selwood (10 tackles, 25 possessions) played yet another fine game for the Cats, despite a knock to the head early in the game that saw him get several stitches, while Dangerfield's great season continued unabated, the reigning Brownlow Medallist collecting 31 touches to go with his three goals. For Adelaide, Jake Lever (14 touches), Lynch (two goals, 20 possessions) and Brad Crouch (28 disposals seven tackles) were amongst the best.

Having consolidated its place in the top four, Geelong will have a bye in round 12 before travelling to Perth to take on West Coast on Thursday week. Having slipped to second, the Crows will return home on Friday to host St Kilda (11th, 5-5) at the Adelaide Oval.
