Match Report

In what might be seen as a defining match for both sides, the Gold Coast Suns have defeated the West Coast Eagles by just three points at Carrara on Saturday. The Suns looked winners at the last break, with a 14-point lead that probably should have been greater but West Coast got on top in the final term, helped by poor skills from the Suns and held what looked to be a winning lead late in the match before late goals to Brandon Matera and Peter Wright tipped the result back in the home side's favour.

The match got off to a slow start, each side scoring only one behind in the first five minutes. Tom Lynch broke the deadlock with a mark and goal of Gold Coast, which seemed to spark the Eagles into action, with Elliott Yeo and Luke Shuey kicking the next two majors to give the visitors a five-point lead. The sides traded behinds for the next 10 minutes before Will Schofield kicked a long goal to put West Coast 11 points clear. However, a late goal Sean Lemmens had the Suns back within four points at the first end-change.

West Coast jumped clear in the early minutes of the second quarter, goals to Jamie Cripps and Jeremy McGovern extended the Eagles' lead to 14 points. Lynch's second goal had Gold Coast back within eight points, and when Jarryd Lyons ran in and kicked his first, the margin was back to two points. Behinds were again the order of the day for the next 12 minutes, before a late mark and goal to Wright had the Suns in front by five at the long break.

It was 'goal for goal' in the early part of the third term, with Yep restoring the lead for the Eagles but Lynch responding for Gold Coast. Another Yeo major saw West Coast lead again but the Suns responded once more through Aaron Hall. Alex Sexton the extended the home side's lead to 11 with his first goal, and Jarrod Harbrow kicked a lovely long goal from an angle at the 24-minute mark, it was Gold Coast by 15 points, the margin reduced to 14 by a late Lewis Jetta behind.

The tide turned immediately the last quarter began. Jetta ran into an open goal and kicked truly inside the first minute. The Eagles took control from there as the Suns continued the turn the ball over. Drew Petrie, Josh Hill and Hill again all added further goals, and the Eagles led by nine points going into time on. Against the run of play, Matera snapped a goal that brought Gold Coast back within four points, and then Wright's long goal at the 27-minute mark had the Suns in front by three.

With 45 seconds remaining the Eagles had possession in the back pocket but skipper inexplicably chipped the ball across the ground to Sam Mitchell, costing the visitors valuable time. They ran out of it in the end, the Suns holding on for an unconvincing but thrilling win that will keep the wolves from coach Rodney Eade's door for at least a little longer.

Best for the Suns included Pearce Hanley (12 marks, 31 disposals), Gary Ablett (36 possessions, five marks) and Lyons (29 touches, eight tackles) while Mitchell (33 touches and four marks) was a standout for the Eagles.

The Suns, 14th with a 4-6 record, will travel to Melbourne to take on Hawthorn at the MCG on Saturday. They will take confidence into that match having beaten the Hawks by 86 points in round three. West Coast (seventh, 6-5) will have a bye in round 12 before home game against Geelong on Thursday week.
