Match Report

Round 14 had already provided three thrilling matches before this one, decided by three points, one point and one point, but virtually nobody would have predicted this game would ultimately fall into the same category. Geelong went into this match as one of the shortest-priced favourites of the year, its opponents the Fremantle Dockers missing key players in Aaron Sandilands and star midfielder Nat Fyfe.

But the Dockers ignored the odds and expectations and, assisted by injuries to the Cats during the afternoon, raced away to lead by 34 points at one stage before Geelong, which was done to only one fit player on the bench in the final term, came from 19 points down at the last change of ends to snatch a remarkable two-point win.

Geelong began the match with first use of the breeze but things began to go wrong for the Cats from the very first minute, when skipper Joel Selwood was concussed when his head accidentally collided with Docker Hayden Ballantyne's. He staggered off the field and did not return. The Dockers' defence meanwhile was doing a good job of holding Geelong's attack, and the Cats' first goal did not come until the 11-minute mark when Dan Menzel kicked his first. Fremantle responded with a great running goal to Brad Hill and the Dockers' defence continued to stand up, Menzel getting the only other major of the term just before the siren. Geelong led 2.0 to 1.1 at the first end-change.

While Fremantle had the use of the breeze in the second term, it was a light one only and few expected the Dockers to make too much of an impact with it but, to the shock of the home crowd, they did so and in style. After a behind to Cat Patrick Dangerfield early in the quarter, a goal to Docker Michael Walters levelled the scores and sparked a scintillating run of majors from the visitors, with Ballantyne and Darcy Tucker kicking two, Walters adding another and Lachie Neale also getting in on the act. Fremantle's lead was 34 points at the 25-minute mark, and it took two late goals from Steven Motlop and Menzel to bring Geelong back within 22 points at half time. The Cats' problems were compounded in that second term by the loss of Tom Stewart, forced from the ground with an eye injury.

With the breeze at their backs in the third quarter, the Cats were looking to make further inroads into their deficit but it was Docker Cam McCarthy who kicked the first goal of the term, extending Fremantle's advantage to 28 points. Zach Tuohy kicked a long bomb to cut it back to 22, but Geelong could not find a follow-up goal, and when Darcy Tucker broke a tackle and kicked his third goal, the Dockers were 26 points clear. The Cats did managed to pull the margin back by kicking two of the last three goals of the term, but Fremantle was still 19 points ahead at the last break, with the Cats now down to just one man on the bench with Darcy Lang limping off late in the quarter.

Fremantle began the final term with a 19-point advantage, and three more fit men than Geelong, but it was the Cats who came out firing and, amazingly, within the space of 10 minutes, James Parsons had kicked two goals and Tom Hawkins one, and the home side was somehow in front. A titanic struggled ensued over the next 20 minutes, neither team able to land a blow, exchanging behinds only.

With only seconds remaining, the Dockers mounted one final foray into attack, a frantic exchange seeing the ball landing in the arms of Walters who found enough space to have a shot at goal from only 15 metres out. But Walters' kicked missed, and the siren sounded moments later signalling a two-point win to the home side. It was an heroic performance from Geelong, given the circumstances, and a disappointing result for the Dockers after it appeared they had the game won. Nevertheless, Fremantle's effort in the absence of Fyfe and Sandilands was more than commendable.

Dangerfield stepped up to play a magnificent match with teammate Selwood on the sidelines. He had 31 touches and laid nine tackles. For the Dockers, Walters (28 disposals, seven marks) was a standout, notwithstanding his last-second miss, while Lachie Neale was also excellent.

Next up for the third-placed Cats is a huge challenge. GWS at the Sydney Showground next Saturday. The Dockers (12th, 6-7) will return home to Subiaco on Sunday to take on St Kilda, another team with a 6-7 record.
