Match Report

Gold Coast has not figured in the conversations of many footy pundits in their discussions about potential finalists this season but the Suns remain a top-eight chance, albeit a slim one, after the recorded a relatively comfortable win over North Melbourne in Saturday's twilight match at Carrara. The Suns set up the match with a run of eight consecutive goals from late in the first quarter until just before half time, by which time they had set up a 40-point lead. The Kangaroos fought back from there, but the gap was too wide to bridge, Gold Coast eventually finishing 19 points to the good, a fitting result in Gary Ablett's 300th AFL match.

For the first 10 minutes of the match, the game looked far from belonging to the Suns. North dominated everywhere, kicking goals through Ben Brown and Shaun Atley, with Brown and Taylor Garner also missing other shots. After seven minutes, the Kangaroos led 2.2 to nil and the home side looked to be in for a dirty evening. But when Peter Wright scored the Suns' first of the match at the 11-minute mark, the tide turned, with Jack Martin and Ben Ainsworth kicking goals to give Gold Coast the lead. The Roos regained the ascendancy temporarily with majors to Nathan Hrovat and Jarrad Waite, but goals to Ainsworth, Tom Lynch and Lynch again had the Suns ahead by 10 points after a high-scoring first term.

High scoring gave way to a dour struggle early in the second quarter, with neither side scoring so much as a behind for the first six minutes. Jack Martin finally broke the deadlock when he marked and kicked his second goal, and the Suns took complete charge from there, adding further goals through Tom Lynch, Ainsworth (via a great soccer kick), David Swallow (after he tackled his brother Andrew) and Alex Sexton to jump to a 40-point lead. North managed a late goal through Waitebut Gold Coast went into the long break in control and leading by 33 points.

As with the second quarter, six minutes passed before a goal was scored in the third. This time it broke North Melbourne's way, with Ryan Clarke cutting the margin to 27 points but two quick replies from Alex Sexton and Lynch saw the Suns' lead back out to 39. North made inroads after that, but only slowly, with Shaun Higgins and Hrovat both kicking behinds before late goals to Brown and Waite brought the Roos back within 23 points at the final change.

Waite followed up the last goal of the third quarter with the first of the final term and North was suddenly within 17 points. But the Kangaroos could not find a follow-up goal and majors to Brayden Fiorini and Lynch took the margin back out to 29 points. North came again with goals to Mason Wood and Higgins but Ainsworth steadied the Suns once more with his fourth goal. The Kangaroos made one final challenge, with majors to Brown and Majak Daw but Gold Coast responded through Touk Miller and Swallow. North got a last minute goal through Aaron Mullett, but the Suns held on to give Ablett a deserved win in his 300th match.

For the Suns Jarryd Lyons (30 disposals, six tackles) and Tom Lynch (20 possessions) five goals were match winners, while Ablett was his usual prolific self with 37 touches. For the Kangaroos Waite (four goals, 19 disposals) was a standout.

The Suns will have a tough task in trying to keep their season alive in round 16, taking on Sydney at the SCG on Saturday. For North, finals are nothing more than a mathematical possibility but the Roos will try and keep the faintest of flames flickering with a win over Fremantle at Docklands next Sunday.
