Match Report

Essendon remains in the hunt for the 2017 finals while the pressure on Collingwood coach Nathan Buckley grows ever stronger after the Bombers recorded and easy win over the Magpies at the MCG on Saturday. A crowd of 63,537 saw Collingwood start well but fade quickly as the Dons built a lead of 34 points by early in the third quarter. The Magpies staged a revival of sorts after that but Essendon reasserted its authority in the final term, carving out an impressive 37-point victory.

A dour opening to the match saw neither side score for almost six minutes before Tim Broomhead finally broke the deadlock with a mark and goal for Collingwood. The Magpies backed up for another goal to Jamie Elliott seven minutes later, but a mark and goal to Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti sparked the Bombers, who quickly added further majors through Zach Merrett, David Zaharakis and Tom Bellchambers to take a 10-point lead. The Pies had a chance to claw one back at the 24-minute mark but Josh Thomas missed, after which Bellchambers marked and kicked his second as Essendon took a 15-point lead into the quarter-time break.

The second quarter began with another dour six-minute stretch, a behind to Collingwood's Ben Reid the only score. This time around it was the Bombers that broke the drought, with a goal to Orazio Fantasia backed up by another to James Stewart and the lead was out to 26 points. Reid halted the run with a mark and goal at the 12-minute mark, but Essendon responded almost immediately with Stewart kicking his second. The Pies pulled one back again through Alex Fasolo, but Fantasia's second had the Dons' lead back out to 27 points at the half.

An early third-term mark and goal to Mason Cox brought the Magpies back within 21 points but the Bombers answered with two of their own through Cale Hooker and Fantasia and their lead was at a game-high 33 points after six minutes. A heavy bump by Levi Greenwood on Essendon's Zach Merrett saw tempers fraying on both sides, and this appeared to rattle the Dons, with Jordan de Goey, Fasolo and Taylor Adams and three quick goals in a row as Collingwood cut the deficit to 15 points. But the Dons regained their composure, kicking two of the last three of the term to lead by 23 at three-quarter time.

It took just 25 seconds for Essendon to dispel any thoughts of a Collingwood comeback, with Merrett - having recovered from his third-quarter knock - kicking a huge goal from well outside the 50-metre arc. Fantasia and Joe Daniher followed up with goals in the next five minutes and the game was as good as over with the Dons' lead at 42 points. Honours were more or less even over the last 25 minutes, with the sting well and truly out of the game, and Essendon cruised to victory.

Best for the Bombers included Fantasia (five goals, five tackles) and Michale Hurley (11 marks, 30 disposals), while Steele Sidebottom (26 disposals, seven marks) and Scott Pendlebury (29 touches, four tackles) stood out for Collingwood.

Only a game plus percentage out of the eight, Essendon will have a chance to make up further ground with a win over St Kilda (seventh, nine wins) at Docklands on Friday night. With the Magpies' season in tatters it will be interesting to see what they bring to Saturday's match against Gold Coast at Carrara next Saturday. The Suns (14th, six wins) have been equally disappointing.
