Match Report

There are those who doubt Port Adelaide's credentials as a genuine premiership contender as a result of their failure to beat sides inside the top eight. But while the Power will have to wait a bit longer to address those external doubts, they continue to give themselves every opportunity by putting lesser sides to the sword and they did so once more on Saturday with a comprehensive 70-point thrashing of North Melbourne at Adelaide Oval.

The tone for the match was set in the first 12 minutes, with Port bursting our of the blocks to kick four goals straight, one each to Sam Gray and Matthew White, followed by a brace from Chad Wingard, to jump to a 24-point lead. North managed to scramble a goal against the run of play through Nathan Hrovat midway through the term but 'normal service' was resumed for the Power after that, with Gray kicking his second, Sam Powell-Pepper his first and Wingard his third goal as the margin blew out to 37 points. The Kangas managed to pull one back through Shaun Higgins at the 24-minute mark but Hamish Hartlett made it an eight-goal term for Port soon after, the Power 37 points clear at quarter time.

After a slow start to the term North claimed the first goal of the second quarter when Shaun Atley received a handball and kicked truly but suffered a blow when fourth-gamer Mitchell Hibberd was forced out of the match with a shoulder injury. It got worse for the Kangaroos soon after when Robbie Gray kicked his first for Port and, although North were able to match with Port for the rest of the quarter, the Power still led by a more than comfortable 37 points at the half.

Any thoughts of a second-half revival from the Roos were quickly dispelled on the resumption of play. Port's defence was impregnable to the point that North did not manage so much as a behind until time on. The Power in the meantime added 3.4, the goals going to Powell-Pepper, Justin Westhoff and Ollie Wines, playing his 100th match, as their lead blew out to 59 points. Time on saw North finally manage a major, with Ben Brown kicking his third, but the margin was still beyond 50 points at the last end-change.

Sam Gray's third goal extended Port's lead to 58 points within two minutes of the final term starting, but North had a brief burst of control after that, with Taylor Garner and Shaun Atley goaling to reduce the deficit to 44. From there, though, it was all Port, and the Power closed out a 70-point win with goals to Charlie Dixon, Jackson Trengove, Sam Gray and Trengove again to complete a comprehensive thrashing of the struggling Kangaroos.

For Port, Wingard played a fine match, collecting 30 possessions to go along with his four goals, while North's Ben Cunnington did all he could to keep his side in the contest, picking up 33 disposals and laying eight tackles.

The win saw Port maintain its place in the top four with 10 wins, and it will look to consolidate that position with a win over Melbourne (seventh, nine wins) at the MCG on Saturday afternoon.  North's season is in freewill at the moment. Despite several close calls, the Kangaroos have not won since round 10 and are ahead of only Brisbane on the ladder. They will look to try and turn things around against Essendon (10th, 8-8) at Docklands on Saturday.
