Match Report

For the second week running, the early Sunday afternoon match at Docklands has produced a pulsating encounter, this time between St Kilda and West Coast. In a free-flowing affair, fortunes fluctuated throughout, with the lead changing several times. The Eagles looked in control late in the second quarter, leading by as much as 22 points, but the Saints hit back to grab the lead in the third. West Coast again took the lead after that, but the Saints regained it in the final term, eventually hanging on to win by eight points, a last-minute goal from Jack Billings sealing the win.

West Coast struck an early blow when Jeremy McGovern soccered off the ground from an angle about 20 metres out to kick the first goal of the match. The Saints levelled the scores when Tim Membrey kicked his first major, and grabbed the lead when Josh Bruce kicked his first but a beautiful running goal to Mark LeCras had scores level again midway through the quarter. A great roving goal to Malcolm Karpany gave the Eagles a seven-point lead on the cusp of time on, but a late major to Jack Steele saw St Kilda back within three points at the first end-change.

Some beautiful running out of defence by the Saints saw Tim Membrey kick the first goal of the second term, giving St Kilda the lead, but Jack Darling's first goal had the Eagles back in front at the 10-minute mark. An easy goal to LeCras extended the margin to eight, and further goals to Josh Kennedy and Dom Sheed had West Coast suddenly out to a 22-point lead. The Saints turned things around from there, though, and majors to Jack Sinclair, Nick Riewoldt and Acres saw the half-time margin back to where it had been at the first break - three points in the Eagles' favour.

After an early goal to Jamie Cripps saw the Eagles' lead out to nine, a diving mark from Jack Billings saw him handball off to Jack Newnes who kicked accurately from the 50-metre mark to put St Kilda back in front, and another one from Bruce had the Saints back in front after six minutes. Kennedy then came to the fore with consecutive goals but a major to St Kilda's Seb Ross had the Saints back within a point. West Coast had a couple of chances to see out the quarter but LeCras and Darling both missed shots and the margin at the last change was incredibly as it had been at the first two - three points with West Coast in front.

Kennedy's fourth goal at the two-minute mark of the final term saw the Eagles' lead back out to nine, but then an unlucky 'out on the full' free kick paid against Eagle Liam Duggan saw Luke Dunstan snap a brilliant goal from the boundary to close the gap back to three points. West Coast once again looked like going on with the job with consecutive goals blowing the margin out to 14 points, but a long goal from Shane Savage and another major from Billings saw the Saints back within a point 11 minutes in.

A Jack Steele snapped goal from a ball up put St Kilda ahead by five points at the 13-minute mark, and behinds to Steele and Jade Gresham extended the lead to seven. Each side added another behind before a long goal from Kennedy - his fifth - saw West Coast back within a point with 28 minutes gone. Bruce had a chance to seal the win for St Kilda when he took a strong mark but he missed an easy shot. Finally, at the 33-minute mark, a mark and goal to Billings - who has had troubles all season with accuracy in front of the big sticks - saw St Kilda to a thrilling eight-point win.

Jack Steele was very much a match-winner for the Saints, collecting 26 possessions and kicking two goals, but also doing the heavy work around the ground, laying 12 tackles - four more than any other player on the ground. Blake Acres (30 disposals, six tackles) was also a great contributor. For the Eagles, Kennedy's five goals - the first of which was his 500th in the AFL - kept them in touch throughout the afternoon, while Andrew Gaff (30 disposals, three tackles) and Shannon Hurn (eight marks, 22 possessions) were also excellent.

The result left both sides with 10 wins, out of the eight on percentage, with three games to play. West Coast will host Carlton at Subiaco next Saturday night, and will them face tough matches against GWS (away) and Adelaide (home) as it tries to reclaim a finals place. The Saints last three home and away opponents will be Melbourne, North Melbourne and Richmond.
