Match Report

Incredible as it might seem, Hawthorn remains a chance to play finals in 2017, after recording a comfortable 27-point win over "fellow Tasmanian" club North Melbourne at York Park on Sunday afternoon. The Hawks led from go to whoa and, with the exception of a brief lapse late in the third quarter that saw the Kangaroos kick five goals in 13 minutes, were never really challenged.

The match got off to a slow start, as the two teams jostled for early ascendancy. The first seven minutes produced nothing more than a rushed behind before a mark and a 50-metre penalty saw Jack Gunston kick the game's first goal, giving Hawthorn a seven-point lead. Teammate Billy Hartung followed up with another shortly after and when Ben McEvoy kicked his first midway through the term, the Hawks were 18 points ahead. Shaun Burgoyne made it 24 with his first major soon after, before North finally hit the scoreboard with goals to Kayne Turner and Ben Brown. Each side added another goal before the quarter-time siren, the Hawks ahead by 14 points at the first break.

A goalless first eight minutes was again the feature of the start of the second term. It was a full eight minutes before either side scored, Hawthorn captain Jarryd Roughead finally breaking through with a goal at the eight-minute mark. Daniel Howe followed up soon after and the Hawks were out to a 26-point lead and getting on top. Ruckman Braydon Preuss clawed one back for North midway through the quarter, but Hawthorn answered with two more through Luke Breust and Isaac Smith and the margin was 33 points in the Hawks' favour at the half.

Hawthorn wasted no time in getting the first goal of the third quarter on the board, Roughead kicking it within 90 seconds of the start. Follow-up goals came from Ricky Henderson and Breust, and the Hawks were suddenly 51 points clear after only six minutes. North staged a mini revival with majors to Taylor Garner and Brown, but two in a row from Isaac Smith and Beust again had Hawthorn's lead back out to the 50 mark.

Just before time on, Brown was paid a free kick and his resultant goal brought about a dramatic change in the game. Over the next 13 minutes, Preuss, Shaun Higgins, Garner and Declan Mountford all added further majors and in virtually the blink of an eye the margin was back to 19 points.

The three-quarter time break halted the Kangaroo charge and allowed the Hawks to reset. They shored up their defence and stopped North's flow of scoring and at the eight-minute mark Roughead kicked his third to take Hawthorn's lead back out to a relatively comfortable 25 points. North tried to mount one final challenge with Cameron Zurhaar goaling at the 11-minute mark but Hawthorn responded again through Burgoyne, his second goal taking the sting out of the match. Each side added one further goal and the Hawks ran out 27-point victors, their very slim finals hopes still alive.

For Hawthorn, Jack Gunston (11 marks, 27 possessions) was a standout, while Tom Mitchell was again prolific with 35 touches. Higgins (31 disposals, four tackles) was North Melbourne's best player.

The Hawks will need many other results to go their way if they are to make finals, but they must win both of their remaining matches, against Carlton in round 22 and the Western Bulldogs in round 23. North will finish off its season with games against St Kilda and Brisbane, the second of those a potential 'battle for the wooden spoon'.
