Match Report

The inaugural AFL Women's season kicked off with a bang far louder than even the most optimistic of fans would have expected when more than 24,000 jammed into Princes Park to see Carlton and Collingwood clash in the very first AFLW match played for premiership points. There were several thousand more fans left outside after gates were locked, with the ground's capacity having been reached. AFL CEO Gillon McLachlan addressed those who were unable to get in, thanking them for their attendance and apologising for the fact that they would be unable to see the match.

Those lucky enough to be inside saw the match get off to a scrappy start, with nerves and some strong tackling preventing any early flow. Collingwood eventually broke the drought to score the first ever AFLW goal, with Jasmine Garner becoming the answer to the perennial future trivia question, "Who kicked the first ever AFLW goal?" Unfortunately for Magpie fans, she remains—for the time being at least—the answer to the question, "Who kicked Collingwood's only AFLW goal?" That goal proved to be the Magpies' last of the evening, as Carlton settled into a rhythm of structured team play soon after to take control of the match.

The Blues had three goals on the board at quarter time, two of those kicked by Darcy Vescio, who looked a class above many of the other players on the field. With Brianna Davey and Nat Exon also excelling, Carlton looked far more organised and potent throughout the match, eventually finishing with seven goals to Collingwood's one to win in a canter by 35 points. The Magpies struggled across the ground but captain Steph Chiocci was influential throughout. Collingwood's other marquee player, Moana Hope, had a quiet night, and the Magpies also had the worst of the night injury-wise in what proved to be a very physical contest.

While the Magpies' poor start to the competition is not the end of the world, the season is only seven games in duration and they will be looking to bounce back with a much stronger showing against Melbourne next week. The Blues meanwhile will return to Princes Park next Saturday full of confidence as they take on the GWS Giants.
