Pacy, a good ball handler, and an effective kick with either foot, Carlton’s Adrian Whitehead hit the ground running when, as an 18 year old, he debuted with a 26 possession performance on a wing in a round three 1994 defeat of Geelong at Princes Park. Thereafter, if only for a while, things got better, with the highlight coming in 1995 when Whitehead was the youngest member of the Blues’ all conquering flag-winning combination.

If that was the pinnacle, however, the nadir was not long in arriving. During pre-season training in 1996 Whitehead began experiencing foot problems, which over time would worsen. He continued playing, but something of the old zip and sparkle had gone. Eventually, midway through the 1999 season, he accepted that he was fighting a losing battle, and retired, aged just 23. He had played 63 AFL games and scored 22 goals.
