A tenacious, close checking defender Alan Martin was on a half back flank for Footscray in their 1954 grand final win over Melbourne. It was the last of his 105 VFL games for the a he had joined in 1949 from Golden Point. He was highly consistent performer, as evidenced by the fact that he was never once omitted from the team because of bad form. After leaving Footscray he returned to Golden Point as coach.
