After serving in the RAAF during the war Alan Olle made his senior VFL debut for St Kilda, aged 21, in the opening round of the 1946 season. Although he played much of his football on the wing it was his defensive capabilities which caught the eye. Nowadays, he would be called a tagger. When he retired in 1951 he had played 51 games for the Saints and, reflecting his defensive mind-set, registered just one goal.
