Alan Jarrott played 79 VFL games and kicked 31 goals for North Melbourne between 1977 and 1981, and 91 games and 26 goals with Melbourne from 1982 to 1986. Not the most flashy or flamboyant of players he was nevertheless highly effective whether across half back or on the ball. He also boasted great powers of concentration making him ideal for the tagging role he was sometimes asked to assume.
During his time with North he suffered the double disappointment of missing both the 1977 and 1978 grand finals after being dropped. A feature of his game which attracted frequent praise was his highly accurate use of handball. After retiring as a player he served as Melbourne's under nineteens coach for a season and a half and later worked as a sports journalist for The Age.
