Although his VFL career was comparatively brief Bert Hartkopf was a stand-out performer for University during the club’s first few seasons in the League. A forward, he marked well, and could kick both long and accurately, in particular when using the place kick. He played 48 games and kicked 87 goals for the Students from 1908 to 1911 and in 1914. He was the club’s leading goal kicker in 1909-10-11, with a best tally of 30 goals in 1910.
