From Narre Warren, Alby Smedts was a tough, resolute defender who could be relied on to keep extremely close tabs on his man. He commenced his senior football career with VFA side Waverley in 1972 and continued with the Panthers for four years. They slumped to relegation in his first season and were a second division team for the remainder of his stint. The 1976 season saw him joining Footscray, where he developed into an extremely handy player, playing 51 games and scoring four goals in four seasons. He found the going somewhat tougher at St Kilda, where he moved in 1980, and managed just 10 appearances and no goals over two seasons before retiring.
