Strong in the air and a superb exponent of the drop kick, Alex Doyle enjoyed a fine, if somewhat brief, league career with Carlton during the early years of the Great Depression. From 1928 to 1931 he played 53 VFL games and kicked 32 goals for the Blues, forming a redoubtable ruck partnership for much of that time with Charlie Davey. When required, he could also slot in at centre half forward.

In 1932 Doyle joined VFA side Preston where he finished his playing career, making 42 appearances and kicking 18 goals over three seasons. He later coached Essendon reserves.
