Alf Hughes was already 23 when he made his VFL debut with Hawthorn, but he quickly made up for lost time by developing into a top class defender for the Hawks. Between 1952 and 1959 he played a total of 107 senior games, and also represented the VFL on the interstate front. He was a club best and fairest award in 1957. After leaving Hawthorn he played with Wimmera Football League Club Nhill.
