Only a fringe player at Carlton, where he started 13 of his 16 games on the bench, including the winning grand final of 1947 against Essendon, Allan Greenshields looked much more at home after moving to St Kilda. Playing mainly as a half back flanker he was dependable and consistent and became a highly respected figure at the club. His 16 appearances for Carlton came between 1947 and part of the way through the 1949 season. He then added 57 games for the Saints from 1949 to 1954. Prior to joining Carlton he had played for Pascoe Vale as well as Coburg in the VFA.
