A versatile footballer, capable of playing at centre half forward, on a half forward flank, even on occasion in the centre, Allan Moncrieff was recruited by Footscray from Parkdale Amateurs. He was never quite an automatic selection for the seniors but was usually serviceable when called upon. His VFL career with the Dogs comprised 67 games in which he scored 44 goals in 1943 and from 1945 to 1951. His son Michael (profiled below) later played with distinction for Hawthorn.
