When he commenced with Carlton in 1970 he went by the name of Andrew Lukimitis, but in 1971 he changed his surname by deed-poll to Lukas. He was a handy wingman and defender who never quite managed to hold down a regular place in the powerful Blues line-up. He did, however, get to play in the winning grand final of 1972 against Richmond, albeit only as 19th man (he did get a run).

Sadly for Lukas that was as good as it got during his time with Carlton and midway through the 1973 season, after 34 VFL games and three goals for the Blues, he transferred to Fitzroy. In two and a half seasons with the Lions he added a final 30 games and one goal to his respective VFL career tallies. He rounded off his playing career in the VFA with first division club Dandenong where he played 28 games and scored 31 goals from 1978 to 1981.
