Andrew Cross was a talented rover who arguably failed to make the most of his undoubted ability. St Kilda recruited him from local side St Kilda City and he made his VFL debut in 1979. However, his progress was anything but smooth, and after playing just eight games in his first two seasons he did not play senior football at all in 1981 and 1982. He remained with the Saints for two more seasons, earning fairly regular senior selection, and arguably producing the best football of his career in the process. Nevertheless, St Kilda allowed him to transfer to Fitzroy in 1985 where he played 19 games and scored 12 goals to add to the 31 games and 31 goals registered with the Saints. He rounded off the VFL portion of his career at Richmond in 1986, but could only manage a single goalless appearance for the year. He joined VFA side Frankston in 1987 where he saw out his playing career with 27 appearances and 30 goals over three seasons.
