Andrew Gowers hailed from Xavier College and developed into a handy player for Hawthorn after making his senior VFL debut in 1988. Used mainly as a wingman during the first half of his career he later proved eminently capable of holding down a key position. The Hawks' victorious grand final of 1991 against West Coast was among the 89 V/AFL games played by Gowers by the time he transferred to Brisbane in 1995. He spent five seasons with the Bears/Lions but a succession of injuries limited him to 51 senior games.
Andrew Gowers' father Trevor Gowers played 24 senior games for Richmond during the 1960s while his son Billy Gowers is, as of 2019, on the playing list of the Western Bulldogs.
