After exhibiting great promise early in his time with St Kilda Andrew Manning was hampered by injury, and seldom managed to put together a prolonged run of senior appearances. After joining the Saints from Daylesford he debuted in 1985 and went on to play 31 VFL games and score 23 goals in four seasons. Playing mainly as a half forward flanker, he produced arguably the best football of his career after crossing to Essendon, with his fine form in finals being particularly noteworthy. It was therefore sadly ironic that when he put in a rare poor finals performance in the 1990 preliminary final against West Coast he ended up being dropped from the following week’s grand final side. His time with the Bombers saw him play 25 games and score 20 goals from 1989 to 1991.
