A diminutive but robust footballer, Andy McDonald could play in the centre, as a defender, in the forward lines or as a rover, to more or less equivalent effect. He played 146 VFL games and kicked 34 goals for Carlton between 1910 and 1919. In the 1915 grand final defeat of Collingwood he was best on ground. He also played in the Blues’ 1914 premiership team as well as the losing grand finals of 1910 and 1916.
