Prior to joining Melbourne in 1996 Anthony McDonald failed to make the grade at both Carlton and Hawthorn, and also played briefly in the VFA with Coburg, and in the amateurs with Old Xaverians. He spent his first season at the Demons playing in the reserves and winning the club’s best and fairest award at that level. As a consequence, he was promoted to the seniors in 1997.
Resilient and highly skilled, McDonald played most of his football as a midfielder. Apart from a dip in form during his third season, which led to a grounding in the reserves, he was also highly consistent. From 1997 to 2002 he played 104 AFL games and kicked 41 goals. His brothers Alex and James also played in the AFL.
After retiring from League football in 2002 Anthony McDonald played with Parkmore in the Southern Football League.
