After managing just four games and two goals with Essendon in 1897 Arthur came good the following year after crossing to Collingwood. Immensely powerful, and boasting great stamina, he was equally effective across half forward or in the ruck. He spent 11 seasons with Collingwood, playing 173 VFL games and scoring 92 goals. Among his appearances for the Magpies were the winning flag deciders of 1902 against Essendon, when he was among the best players on view, and 1903 against Fitzroy. He also played in the losing grand finals of 1901, in the unaccustomed position of centre, and 1905. For part of the 1906 season and the whole of the following campaign he was Collingwood’s captain.
