Renowned for his vigorous style of play, which did not always conform to the laws and spirit of the game, Barry Harrison was a key contributor to Collingwood’s 1958 grand final triumph over Melbourne. Asked to keep Demons superstar Ron Barassi quiet he did just that, by fair means and foul, for the entire match, and the Magpies won an encounter they were confidently and almost universally expected to lose. The ‘58 grand final was very much the highlight of Harrison’s 56 game, 24 goal career with Collingwood, which spanned the years 1958 to 1961, and included the losing flag decider of 1960 against Melbourne in addition to the aforementioned 1958 success.
In 1964 Harrison attempted a VFL comeback with North Melbourne but managed just a single game before crossing to VFA first division side Sandringham as captain-coach, where he remained at the helm for five years, the last of them in a non-playing capacity. He made 27 appearances for the Zebras and kicked 20 goals.
