Versatile and pacy, Barry Padley joined Fitzroy from Diamond Valley Football League club Reservoir Lakeside and made his senior VFL debut in 1968. He was badly injured during his first season puncturing a lung and breaking four ribs in a match against St Kilda. Because of his adaptability he played in numerous positions over the course of a 154 game 94 goal league career which spanned the years 1968 to 1978. The highlight of that career was probably helping the Lions to a resounding win over North Melbourne in the 1978 night series grand final.

After leaving Fitzroy Padley captain-coached Heidelberg, winning the club’s best and fairest award in 1981.
