Having played his junior football with Gippsland club Neerim South Ben Buckley had a brief stint in the NWFU with Smithton before being recruited by North Melbourne. A defender, he played 74 games and scored 15 goals for the Roos from 1986 to 1993. He enjoyed a particularly fine campaign in 1989 when he ran second in the club best and fairest count. Since retiring as a player Buckley has carved out a noteworthy career in business and management, including serving as general manager of the AFL, chief executive of Football Federation Australia and, since 2016, chairman of the North Melbourne Football Club.
