Vigorous, pacy and clever, Ben Hair joined South Melbourne in 1914 and was a member at the end of that season of the club’s losing grand final team against Carlton. Playing as a follower, he was one of South’s best players, but he might be said to have contributed to the Blues’ win as he missed two relatively easy goal scoring chances late on, and Carlton’s eventual margin of victory was just a single straight kick.

A regular in the South Melbourne team in 1914-15, he gradually fell out of favour after that, and in 1919, having played 43 VFL games and kicked three goals for the southerners, he crossed to St Kilda where he added a final six appearances and three goals before calling time on his career.
