From South Melbourne Juniors, Bernie Nolan was a formidable ruckman who was heavily instrumental in Melbourne’s improved showings in 1907 and 1908 after the club had spent several years in the doldrums. He played 84 VFL games for the Reds from 1904 to 1910 and in 1912, booting 10 goals.
