Having commenced his senior football career with Mortlake Bernie Harris followed his older brother Leon to Fitzroy in 1984. An energetic rover with a keen goal sense he gave the Lions impressive service in 46 games from 1984 to 1986, during which he registered 60 goals. In 1986 he took part in Fitzroy’s last ever finals campaign.

The 1987 season saw him at fledgling VFL club Brisbane where he played 56 games and booted 58 goals over the course of three and a half seasons. He holds the distinction of having kicked the Bears’ first ever League goal. Midway through the 1990 season he transferred to St Kilda via the mid-year draft and he rounded off his career with a five game stint.
